Read a file from the local machine into a DataTable

I have a file on the local machine which contains information of what I need to import into my database. The data file is a very simple text file which contains just a row of data for each row in my database.
I am trying to create a DataTable to get the information from the text file and update the database and reload it. When the text file is not on the local machine, I have access to the file on the server via the network using Sockets.
I have tried:
using (FileStream inputFile = File.OpenRead(@”C:\test.txt”))
{
DataTable dt = new DataTable();
dt.ReadXml(inputFile);
Console.WriteLine(dt.Rows);
}

This does not work.
I have also tried:
DataTable dt = new DataTable();
using (StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(@”C:\test.txt”))
{
dt.Load(sr);
Console.WriteLine(dt.Rows);
}

This does work but I cannot control or specify the columns of the datatable.
I have also tried:
DataTable dt = new DataTable();
DataSet ds = new DataSet();
DataColumnCollection cols = ds.Tables[0].Columns;
cols.Add(new DataColumn(“ID”, typeof(int)));
cols.Add(new DataColumn(“Name”, typeof(string)));
ds.Tables[0].DefaultView.RowFilter = “ID=5”;

dt.Load(ds);
Console.WriteLine(dt.Rows);

This works but I cannot
