Everyday Skills was designed to be an educational software package that aims to provide support for the teaching of everyday skills and activities.Everyday Skills provide two modes of operation. These are Step By Step mode and What’s Right mode and they both support switch access of up to two switches.In Step By Step mode, an activity (i.e. a particular task) is presented as a sequence of steps.  Each step has a visual image, sound and/or spoken commentary.  The end user is thus presented with a sequence of steps to complete a particular task – movement from one step to the next is under this user’s control.  The activities can be customised for the ends user in the sense that the precise set of steps can be selected for a given user and the presentation of the steps (visual and audio style) can be controlled.The What’s Right mode is an interactive program that allows the end user to make choices.  The end user is presented with two images (side by side) and he/she has to select the most meaningful in the context of a particular activity to get a reward.Everyday Skills was designed to support class environments and offers configuration dialogs for creating classes, adding students to classes and assigning activities to students. These dialogs are available from the Parents and Teacher Zone discussed later.

The Everyday Skills software package supports the teaching of everyday skills and activities for children with special needs. The software was designed to support, enhance and extend current teaching practices by combining a graphical user interface, three activities of daily living (ADLs) activities, auditory icons, visual icons and a teacher assistant that supports the teaching of specific skills. The ADLs activities include washing, dressing, cooking, washing dishes, doing hair and oral hygiene. These activities were originally developed as an online learning resource for the parent education section of The Education Village. At the time of writing, the software is in a developmental version.


The software package supports a number of settings, including the following:

– Different modes of operation – can be used as a parent/teacher assistant, self-monitoring

– Training and development of ADL skills (in steps)

– Training and development of general skills (sound and written abilities)

Parent and Teacher Zone

The software supports the concept of a Parents and Teacher Zone where parents can view the activities which have been assigned to their child and are intended to be completed by their child. The information on assignment of tasks to the student and any misassignments are also displayed on the Parents and Teacher Zone. The Parents and Teacher Zone also makes it possible to configure settings that should change under particular circumstances: for example, changes in the overall health of the student.

Parent Zone

When parents log-on to the software, a series of graphic icons are displayed on the screen. Theses represent the different skills that the child has been assigned to and the parent can click on the icons to open the manual for that skill. Everyday Skills works in a similar fashion to the Simitable Robot Man. ( It is based on the evolutionary algorithm, a deterministic method which is quite close to the working methods of everyday life. Every day things have to be learnt through trial and error, but evolution has the potential to find out in advance. The best and most successful organisms get the highest reproduction rate for their genes, and the genes spread through the population.

Everyday Skills is inherently evolution-based. Every individual learns through trial and error, and the teacher/parent can increase the reproduction rate of the individual by rewarding it. The reproduction rate gives the easiest and fastest learning. The user can add individual learning patterns to the individual, and the repeated ones do not need additional learning, they just need to be repeated. The patterns can be added from the parent or teacher zone.

Everyday Skills is a set of training materials for supporting the teaching of everyday skills.  It consists of two parts, a package of seventeen ‘Day by Day’ activities and a set of six ‘We’ll help you, the teacher’ activities.  The activities are presented to the user as a set of steps to be performed.  The end user is prompted to complete each step and is assisted by text and/or sound to move to the next step.  The user can stop, pause, or repeat any step.  They can review the instructions and/or watch the visual images to gain understanding of the steps and supporting hand signals.To help the teacher, Everyday Skills provides an interactive ‘We’ll help you, the teacher’ dialog.  The teacher can point to a picture and select one of the dialog choices.  The user is then prompted to select the correct response to each question.  The responses are presented as pictures of possible answers.  The teacher can also review the student’s responses.  There are 24 activities in the ‘Day by Day’ package, each of them containing a set of 10 lessons that correspond to a particular topic.  These activities can be used as a whole set or individually.  The lessons are intended to be used in sequence with the user moving from lesson to lesson.  The lessons can be used in a sequence or can be repeated independently.  There are a total of 24 lessons.  Nine of these relate to the sensory domain, five to the motor domain and ten relating to life skills.  All activities can be selected for a student or for a class with the options available appearing on the Parents and Teacher Zone discussion screen.One lesson from the ‘Day by Day’ activities was selected as a template for the ‘We’ll help you, the teacher’ activity.  In this lesson, students are introduced to one of two ways of doing a task.  They can be taught to carry out the task and then  given feedback as to their choice of strategy.  Or they can be given the options and choose one themselves.  For instance,  they can carry out a search and then look at what they have found.  Or they can be given a description of two versions of the same thing and have to decide which one to carry out.   The ‘We’ll help you, the teacher’ screen provides a set of three choices.  The teacher

What’s New In Everyday Skills?

It is useful to have an overview of the everyday skills and activities in Everyday Skills. These are divided into nine skill groups. The everyday skill description (below) uses the appropriate section, in this case for Step by Step mode.

Learning. The aim of the everyday skills is to help children to learn to act in ways that will lead to their being successful in life. The everyday skills are presented as activities, each requiring an outcome (goal achievement). They are examples of life skills and the skills learnt are called life skills.
Everyday skills focus on skills that can be learnt and practiced, rather than skills that are innate. Everyday skills aim to teach skills that are needed to live in an increasingly complex world. These are skills that are learnt over a lifespan.  It is worth noting that the everyday skills are not meant to be what the title implies. In other words, many of the everyday skills are not skills that children need to ‘learn’ or acquire. These are skills that are needed from early childhood.
The learning of everyday skills helps children to experience the world as well as manage their resources.  When children practise the skills, they feel good about themselves. The skills are meant to be practised and carried out independently by children themselves, using their own personal resources. The skills are always safe for children to practise with the only restriction being that children must be able to practise them independently.

Skills with impact on daily function

Some of the everyday skills have a positive impact on children’s daily life and the skills taught aim to be life skills.   For example, the ‘Eating’ everyday skills are skills that are needed to eat a healthy balanced diet.  Practising the eating skills means that children can meet their daily energy needs by eating a range of food and meal times. It is important that children’s eating skills are developed when they are young as it can be difficult to develop them at a later time.  
The everyday skills with long lasting effects on daily function are those that help children learn to care for themselves and their clothes.  Children need to be cared for by their parents and other adults to develop self care skills, such as learning how to do daily tasks, be independent, wash and clean clothes,
